THE ART OF GIFT-GIVING in Japan is a difficult one to master. What does one give? And how to present the said gift? In such a climate, floral artist Nicolai Bergmann is quite the superstar.

His original flower boxes have become the most riveting way to present florals to someone. Constructed with both fresh and preserved blooms, they come in an understated black box and make up a flower world in a compact space.

Open one of his boxes, and you see blooms of delicate colours like white and pale green, or in saturated tones of red and orange. Colour gradations — especially pink — is one of their specialties. You’ll notice plenty of roses, a nod to the old-fashioned symbol of romance, intertwined with rare seeds and lush green succulents for a stunning visual pop. 

The idea for packing fresh blooms into a little black box started as a request from a client in public relations. Her order was for 600 compact flower gifts for a press event. The florist got to work, designing bloom boxes that the client felt looked great. But she eventually decided not to adopt his idea.  

“I was stuck with all these boxes of flowers,” recalls Bergmann. Thankfully, the unusual presentation proved a hit when he put them up for sale. Today, Bergmann’s Rolodex is filled with top names in the fashion and jewellery industry.

His way with flowers has led to him becoming a celebrated artist in Japan – the go-to guy for all things to do with blooms. Most recently, he set up a 10m flower installation for Estee Lauder’s breast cancer awareness campaign. The site: The celebrated Kiyomizudera temple in Kyoto.
